Programmes & Projects

NATURE BASED SOLUTIONS - NBS

The projects of the Nature Based Solutions – NBS programme involve the restoration of native vegetation, expansion of integrated agricultural systems and restoration of pasture areas. In addition, within the programme, techniques will be researched to restore vegetation, re-establishing native species. In this way, the soil will accumulate a high biodiversity of plant substrates that should stimulate its microbial biomass, resulting in potential carbon fixation in the soil.

CARBON CAPTURE AND UTILIZATION - CCU

The objective of the CCU program is to create value from CO2 emissions through the design of integrated processes for CO2 capture and conversion. In this concept, CO2 is considered a valuable chemical building block for fuels and materials.

BIOENERGY WITH CARBON CAPTURE AND STORAGE - BECCS

BECCS is the acronym for Bioenergy Energy with Carbon Capture and Storage. It is a technology or a set of technologies that associate biomass energy jobs with carbon capture and storage, a process always carried out on a large scale. With this, it is possible to sequester the carbon present in the atmosphere. The program aims to contribute to building a positive public perception of BECCS and influencing the design of public sustainability policies for the Brazilian energy system.

GREENHOUSE GASES - GHG

One of the advantages of accurately quantifying CO2 emission reductions in certain processes is obtaining more accurate and reliable carbon credits. A carbon credit represents a ton of carbon that is no longer emitted into the atmosphere. If a company demonstrates how much it is reducing its emissions, this is priced and converted into carbon credits, which can be traded on the international market. The research aims to quantify the sources and sinks of greenhouse gases and study the processes that control the fluxes of greenhouse gases (GHG) in the Amazon – GHG-AMAZÔNIA. It also aims to develop algorithmic data analysis methods based on statistical and Artificial Intelligence models coupled to an Information and Service System – modeled in the cloud – which can be integrated with automated data collection methods.

ADVOCACY

A well-balanced package of required standards, specifications and guides ought to be seen at the core of climate mitigation policy, because they might speed up or slow down the implementation and the needed broadening and deepening adoption of essential technologies. Through the first project of Advocacy programme, RCGI’s teams will be encouraged to understand and start facing the standardization issues related to their technological development from the beginning.

2016 - 2021 PROGRAMMES

ENGINEERING PROGRAMME

RCGI includes projects that investigate the technological, scientific and market to a greater use of natural gas in the Brazilian energy matrix and as fuel for transportation. It concerns the development of new-generation thermal power plants, problems involving the transportation and storage of natural gas, as well as key topics for the success of gas as a premium fuel for the 21st century.

PHYSICAL CHEMISTRY PROGRAMME

RCGI gathers projects focused on natural gas conversion into chemicals with high added value. The research projects in this area are focused on chemical and biochemical synthesis routes, proofs of concept, development of catalysts, modeling and process optimization. Also technological applications will be considered, such as development of fuel cells, solar energy and ceramic membranes. Associate researches are related to the production of biogas from biomass derived from ethanol production.

CO2 ABATEMENT PROGRAMME

Projects of RCGI aim to produce elements to support and encourage federal, state and municipal policies for an effective insertion of natural gas in the energy systems. First focusing on the Brazilian context, the research scope will also expand to the global context, in particular to emerging countries.

ENERGY POLICIES AND ECONOMICS PROGRAMME

RCGI includes projects that investigate management, transport, storage and and usage of CO2.

GEOPHYSICS PROGRAMME

RCGI includes projects that investigate the technological, scientific and market to a greater use of natural gas in the Brazilian energy matrix and as fuel for transportation. It concerns the development of new-generation thermal power plants, problems involving the transportation and storage of natural gas, as well as key topics for the success of gas as a premium fuel for the 21st century.
