Seminar – MUSE: A new global energy model. Overview and applications
February 7, 2018 @ 2:00 pm
The MUSE model (the ModUlar energy systems Simulation Environment), the novel modelling environment developed at the Sustainable Gas Institute Imperial College London, simulates plausible pathways of the energy systems transition to a low-carbon economy on a global scale. The model simulates the behaviour of real investors under different scenarios. This seminar will first discuss the distinctive features of MUSE in the context of Energy Systems Models, highlighting its global scope, modularity, flexibility, and technological detail.
Following, the presentation will give a technical overview of the methodology used in selected MUSE sector modules and a discussion of a relevant application of each module in the context of decarbonisation will be demonstrated. The sectors to be covered are Power Generation, Industry, Refinery and Agriculture & Land Use. Results will focus on analysing the effects of carbon-constrained policies on the energy system (e.g. uptake of carbon capture technologies in the electricity generation system and/or in energy intensive industries) as well as forecasting the replacement of the existing technologies and fuel switching.
