Physical Properties Needs for the 21st CenturyDatabases, Models and Uncertainty

Marco A. Satyro

Physical property calculations are at the core of process design, process simulation and process optimization. These activities are normally executed within a process simulation environment and users are presented with a highly polished, “pasteurized” environment where exceptionally complex calculations involving thermodynamic models proceed with little or no actual understanding from the user related to the models or the data mused to develop the models used in the computations.
Notwithstanding advanced materials and advanced models required to simulate such materials, common, apparently well understood substances and mixtures are now being processed under very high pressures and temperatures, stressing existing thermodynamic models and moving us towards areas where little is known a‐priori about the quality of the models or the underlining data. In this paper we examine the interplay between databases, models, the uncertainty in the thermodynamic data and the consequent uncertainty on calculated thermodynamic properties and what would be the desired characteristics of models to be developed in the future where quality assurance parameters are built in the model development from the ground up with the aim of developing introspective software systems that can provide the user with estimates about the quality of values it computes.

Sonocitology: Manipulation and Sensing Particles

Prof Anne L Bernassau

Anne L. Bernassau was born in Paris, France and earned her Ph.D. degree from the Institute of Medical Science and Technology at the University of Dundee, UK in 2009. Her PhD topic was on “Micro-engineering for high frequency ultrasound arrays”. She joined the University of Glasgow on the collaborative project “Electronic sonotweezers: particle manipulation with ultrasonic arrays” and pioneered acoustic multi-transducers manipulation for the use of bio-engineering and targeted drug delivery applications. After the success of sonotweezers, she secured a 4 year Lord Kelvin Adam Smith fellowship as an independent academic researcher.

Using supercomputers to understand fundamentals of turbulent combustion

Prof. Evatt Hawkes, University of New South Wales (UNSW)

“Achieving significant improvements of fuel efficiency and reductions of emissions (including CO2) requires better understanding of the multi-physics turbulent flows that govern the performance of combustors. Direct numerical simulations (DNSs) have long been used to obtain this understanding, but until recently they were limited to very idealised scenarios. Advances in supercomputing have enabled rapid progress, such that DNSs of laboratory-scale experiments are now possible. In this article I will discuss recent examples of DNS performed in my group at the University of New South Wales, focussing on the stabilisation of lifted flames and on flame structure in high Karlovitz number lean premixed flames.”

Models for heterogeneous catalysts: an approach at the atomic level

Hans-Joachim Freund
Fritz-Haber-Institut der Max-Planck-Gesellschaft, Berlin, Germany

Increasing the complexity of the models towards supported nano particles, resembling a real disperse metal catalyst, allows one to catch in the model some of the important aspects that cannot be covered by single crystals alone. One of the more important aspects is the support particle interface. We have developed strategies to prepare such model systems based on single crystalline oxide films which are used as supports for metal and oxide nano particles, whose geometric structure, morphology, electronic structure, as well as interaction and reaction with molecules from the gas phase may be studied at the atomic level.

Industrial Partnerships: Turning research ideas into new technology

Kris Anderson, Imperial College London

Commercial development is a difficult and costly process. The prospects of success can be greatly improved by theoretically exploring the ideas behind projects prior to making large financial commitments. Ideas for new technology are often plentiful, but establishing which of those ideas have the greatest commercial potential is critical to success.
